New Destination or Goal
When we set off toward a New Destination or Goal, it is like taking off in an airplane, we need to have an idea of both our departure time and arrival time. We need to set a schedule for ourselves and expect to arrive pretty much on schedule. But as soon as we take off, we experience unexpected headwinds. The situation in our business is similar. As soon as we embark on a new product or service, we will experience headwinds. Everything cost twice as much and then takes three times longer than we anticipated. We should estimate how long it should take to achieve certain milestones and then lay out a timeline to get us there leaving plenty of time for unexpected delays.
Headwinds in our business will come from several sources. Our primary source will be other people. They will disappoint us and often times fail to live up to our expectations, and may even turn out to be indifferent. Our customers will be the major source of headwinds. When we start a new venture, we will be amazed at how difficult it is to get customers to buy our product or service for the first time. Our customers will disappoint us in they will buy less than we expected, take longer to buy than expected, pay slower than expected. Remember the customer is always right. It is not what we produce but what people buy that counts.
Another form of headwinds we will face has to do with money. Some people will tell you that it is easy to make all the money we want just by thinking positively and visualizing ourselves as wealthy. Everyone wants to believe this is true, and many people embrace the idea of effortless wealth with their whole hearts. But that does not include those people who have actually achieved financial success. People who have made a lot of money have learned through bitter experience that the only thing easy about money is losing it. “Making money is like digging with a pin; losing money is like pouring water on the sand.” Japanese Proverb
Often times we experience headwinds within ourselves. Much to our surprise, we lack specific talents, skills, and knowledge we need to succeed. We may find we are a poor time manager or we lack self-discipline. We cannot seem to focus, concentrate, and apply ourselves single mindedly to our most important tasks.
We waste time and feel overwhelmed with too much to do and too little time in which to do it. We may lack financial, analytic, marketing, or selling skills. We may not know how to plan and organize our business, advertise effectively and attract customers, or persuade our prospects to buy from us. Fortunately these are all learnable skills. Figure out what skill we need to increase the quality of our business, and then set out to learn it. The starting point of mastering these essential skills is for us to admit that we need them. After that, May the education begin!
Because of our incredible mind, we may learn any skill we need to achieve any goal we may set for ourselves. We must never allow ourselves to be held back because we lack a particular skill.
