Strategic Planning
Business leaders of today use strategic planning in both their business and personal life. Strategic Planning is the tool that takes us from wherever we are to wherever we want to be. Our success in life will be determined, to a large extent by our ability to think, plan and take action. The stronger our skills are in each of these areas, the faster we will achieve our goals and the happier we will be.
The difference between business leaders who use strategic planning to organize and direct their business and personal lives and those who do not is like the difference between taking a plane and taking a car. They both will get us from point A to point B, but the plane “Strategic Planning” will get us there much faster and without as many stops.
The skill in strategic planning is not something we are born with, it is a systematic way of thinking and acting and is, therefore, something we may learn. With practice, we may master the many different elements that make up this very valuable skill, and we will get into the skill of thinking and acting strategically for the rest of our lives. When we do acquire this valuable skill, the results will be extraordinary. Our business and personal life will take off, and the sky will truly be the limit.
Why is strategic planning and thinking so helpful? The answer is simple: it saves us an enormous amount of time and money. When we review and analyze our strategic plan quarterly we find ourselves focusing on the tasks necessary to achieve our goals. At the same time, with a little discipline we stop doing the things that keep us from achieving success and happiness. We do more of the right things and fewer things that get and keep us off track. We learn to set performance goals for people and our projects. We become skilled at measuring and tracking our results. We move into the express lane in both work and our personal life.
Our goals for personal strategic planning are very similar. The key difference is rather than improving our return on equity, our planning efforts will allow us to realize a greater return on energy. You might say that personal strategic planning will increase our return on life. A business measures its equity in terms of financial capital. On the other hand, we measure our personal equity in terms of our own human capital. Our personal equity consists of the physical, emotional, and mental energies we are able to invest. Set a goal of achieving the very highest return possible on the investment of our energies.
Ask yourself this question: What is it I do especially well? Examine the areas where you excel or are clearly superior to others in your field. You need to know what you can claim as your competitive advantage in both your business and personal life. This is the lifeblood strategic planning. Our success will be directly tied to how excellent we become at using all of our energies in both our business and personal planning.
