Contacts and Relationships

One of the greatest forms of financial leverage will be our contacts. Knowing the right people and being known by them will open doors for us that will save us many years of hard work. The quality and quantity of our Contacts and Relationships may have more to do with our financial success than any other factor.

Here are three things you can do to expand your list of contacts. First, make a list of the twenty five people who you feel would be the most useful for you to get to know. Then, develop a strategy on just how you will get to meet everyone of them over the next twelve months.

The second way is for you to network at every opportunity. Join business and trade associations. Attend meetings and get involved. Volunteer for service on a key committee. This action alone will help you grow your business and increase your financial leverage.

When I was in the Air Condition Business, while working with the Chamber of Commerce, I came to the attention of a senior executive with our Sports Authority. They hired my company to install an air conditioner in their computerize sign in front of the stadium. This lead to us doing all of the Sports Authority’s work, and that included both the baseball and football teams. Meeting people is very important so network at every opportunity.

The third way is to get involved in community service organizations. The best people in every community, the people you should know and who should know you, are usually involved in public service in some way. Start with the United Way or Easter Seals in your own city, or get involved in any charity that you care about or are interested in. You will be amazed at the quality of people that you will meet doing voluntary service.

Another form of leverage is creativity. Remember, one new idea is all you need to start a fortune. Everyone has the ability to come up with creative ideas and solutions if they look for them. All great fortunes begin with an idea.

Another powerful form of leverage that will help you is creating good work habits. Good work habits make an extraordinary difference. In a recent study of a hundred and four Chief Executive Officers all agreed the ability to set priorities and then to get the job done fast were the two qualities most readily led to promotion and increases in pay.

Good work habits will also bring you to the attention of the important people in business as fast or faster than anything else we can do. In the final analysis, your business will always get paid based on results. If we develop, a reputation for being the company that gets the job done right, that alone will put you onto the fast track in your industry.
