Master of Our Time

We need to stand back on a regular basis and analyze ourselves, our life and our time usage. We need to become a Master of Our Time rather than a slave to continuing time pressures.

Time is our most precious resource. It is the most valuable thing we have. It is perishable, it is irreplaceable, and it may not be saved. It may only be reallocated from activities of lower value to activities of higher value. All work requires time. Time is absolutely essential for the important relationships in our life. The very act of taking a moment to think about our time before we spend it will begin to improve our personal time management immediately.

Personal time management begins with us. It begins with our thinking through what is really important to us in life. And it only makes sense if we organize it around specific things we want to accomplish. We need to set goals in three major areas of our life.

First, we need family and personal goals. These are the real reasons why we get up in the morning, why we work hard and upgrade our skills, why we worry about money and sometimes feel frustrated by the demands on our time.

What are our personal and family goals, both tangible and intangible? A tangible family goal could be a bigger house, a better car, a larger television set, a vacation, or anything else that costs money. An intangible goal would be to build a higher quality relationship with our spouse and children, to spend more time with our family going for walks or reading books. Achieving these family and personal goals are the real essence of time management, and its major purpose.

The second area of goals is our business and career goals. These are the how goals, the means by which we achieve our personal, why goals. How may we achieve the level of income that will enable us to fulfill our family goals? How may we develop the skills and abilities to stay ahead of the curve in our career? Business and career goals are absolutely essential, especially when balanced with family and personal goals.

The third type of goals is our personal development goals. Remember, we may not achieve much more on the outside than what we have achieved and become on the inside. Our outer life will be a reflection of our inner life. If we wish to achieve worthwhile things in our personal and career life, we must become a worthwhile person in our own self development. We must build ourselves if we want to build our life. Perhaps the greatest secret of success is we may become anything we really want, to achieve any goal that we really want to achieve. But in order to do it, we must go to work on ourselves and never stop.

Starting today, develop the habit of stopping on a regular basis and thinking about what is really important to you. The more often we stop and think. The better decisions we will make. It is that simple.
